9 Simple and Effective Home Remedies for Dandruff

All women love to have beautiful long and healthy tresses, but sometimes dandruff gives the worst nightmare of the life. Dandruff is caused when the scalp becomes greasy producing white flakes which occur due to dead skin. Skin cells on the scalp are formed continuously and shedding of these skin cells is common. Dandruff happens when the skin cells shed faster than the normal rate. Let’s see what causes dandruff?

Aspirin contains salicylic acid which is the main ingredient in many medicated shampoos for dandruff. Take two uncoated aspirin pills and crush them into a fine powder. Opt for a shampoo which is dye-free, fragrance-free shampoo because extra additives can aggravate dandruff. Pour required shampoo into a bowl and add the crushed aspirin powder. Let the shampoo sit on hair for 5 minutes for salicylic acid to exfoliate the scalp. Rinse your hair.

Fenugreek seeds are a very effective solution for dandruff. Nicotinic and protein present in fenugreek are useful to treat dandruff, hair fall and other scalp issues such as dry hair. Fenugreek, when used regularly will result in healthy and beautiful hair.

Soak fenugreek seeds overnight to soften them. Grind these seeds into a paste and add warm coconut oil to it. Let it cool and apply this mixture to the scalp.You can also add lemon if you wish to. Keep it for 30 minutes and rinse it off with a mild shampoo. This is one of the commonly followed home remedies for dandruff.


Olive Oil

The moisturizing property of olive oil helps in hydrating the scaly areas on the scalp thus which causes dandruff. As this oil hydrates the scalp, the scaly areas loosen in large chunks rather than small flakes. Thus, olive oil is one of the best remedies for dandruff treatment.

Take 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of turmeric and mix them well into a thick paste. Apply the mixture on scalp and hair. Massage your scalp for 15 minutes and leave it for 30 minutes. Wash your hair with mild shampoo and finish off with conditioner.


Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has terpinen-4-ol which has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties that help in killing the bacteria causing dandruff. It also moisturizes scalp effectively and treats dry scalp which is one of the causes for dandruff making it one of the best dandruff home remedies.

Take 2-3 tablespoons of carrier oil such as jojoba, coconut or olive oil and add 4-5 drops of tea tree oil. Mix it well and apply on the scalp. Massage the scalp using fingers for 10 minutes and leave it overnight. Wash your hair in the morning with mild shampoo. Repeat this process 2 -3 times a week for quick results.


Lemon Juice


Lemon juice contains citric acid which treats the scalp and fights dandruff from the roots. Lime also contains anti microbial properties which help in fighting fungus causing dandruff. It not only fights dandruff, it also makes hair voluminous and healthy. Now, let’s see how we can use lemon as one of the dandruff remedies.

Take one tablespoon of lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of yogurt into a bowl. Mix them well and apply it on the scalp. Leave it for 30 minutes and wash your hair with mild shampoo and warm water. Follow this 3 times a week to see good results.


Aloe Vera

Aloe vera contains cleansing enzymes which eliminate dandruff and dead skin cells. It also has anti-fungal properties which help in removing yeast and fungus on the scalp.

Extract fresh aloe vera gel from the plant and add 4-5 drops of eucalyptus oil. Mix it well and apply it on the scalp. Massage gently for 5-10 minutes. Wash your hair after an hour or two.




Salt contains large amounts of sodium chloride which usually causes dry hair. But still, it is used in many of the hair products to increase the thickness of the liquid. As it causes dryness, it is very useful in treating dandruff and oily scalp.

Take a handful of shampoo and a tablespoon of salt. Mix it and massage it gently on the scalp. Wash it off thoroughly with shampoo and conditioner.

If you had curl relaxing keratin treatment please do not use salt on your hair. Salt breaks down the keratin and your hair will get to normal condition.

Apple cider vinegar is antibacterial and antifungal as it has loads of natural probiotics. This nature of ACV helps in getting rid of dandruff and fungus. ACV also helps in soothing the scalp with its anti inflammatory properties. The acidic content in ACV retains the pH balance of the scalp and it removes the build up from the scalp but maintains natural oil.

Boil one cup of water and add 5-7 peppermint leaves and 1 cup of apple cider vinegar. Let it steep for two hours. Strain it into a spray bottle and spray it on the hair and massage for 10 minutes. Wash your hair with warm water and mild shampoo.


Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is known for its moisturizing property, this cures the dryness of the scalp which usually causes dandruff. Coconut oil penetrates deep into the scalp as it contains caprylic, lauric and capric acid which helps in killing the fungus.

Hot oil massage with coconut oil is the best and inexpensive home remedies for dandruff. Warm the coconut oil and dip the tip of the fingers into the warm oil. Massage the scalp for 10 minutes and leave it for 30 minutes. Rinse off the hair with shampoo.
